A tiny town, its welcome sign and frog delicacy fondly recalled. As an attraction it might date back to the 1950s or earlier. Sausage tree, gator, shell and coconut souvenirs.

Frog City was famous for their unusual welcome sign. It read: Welcome to Frog City- Population 12 (with the 12 crossed out and 11 written under it). The following year, the 11 would be crossed out with the number 9 written under that. And so forth until......well....0. I believe it was one of the first places in S. Fla. to offer swamp buggy rides. It was always a welcomed stop on the empty 41 going west. However, you knew once you reached that point, the Seminole Indian Reservation wasn't too far away.
[Susan Weiss McCue, 05/29/2001]When I was very young, my family took a trip to South Florida. We visited a place called Frog City. I believe it was somewhere off Hwy 41. As I remember it was an Indian Village and had large sausage trees. We went back in the fall of 1997, but the city was nowhere to be found. We drove both hwy 41 and I-75. I know it did exist once because I have a pocket knife with the name Frog City on it. Any clues?

Tipster Chuck Morford answers: Frog City used to be on U.S. 41 about 15 to 20 miles west of Miami, between Miami and Naples. Not sure if it's still there, but a few years ago (maybe 5 or 6) some of the buildings were still standing and there was an old dock that my friends and I used to stand on and catch native tropical fish for our aquariums...
