Emporia claims to be the "founding city" of Veterans Day (Birmingham, AL has shored up its own claim of first and longest-running Veterans Day observance, since 1947). Emporia's US Representative Ed Rees presented the bill to Congress to make it an official national holiday, which was signed into law in 1954.
