What do you do with the top part of a giant statue of Revolutionary War hero Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion? The answer devised by the town of Johnsonville was to mount it atop a 12-foot-tall cement pylon. Unveiled on May 18, 2013, the half-statue, half-bridge-abutment stands on the spot where the Swamp Fox received his military commission to inflict hell on the British, which he did with blood-soaked efficiency (as any fan of the film The Patriot can tell you).
All that's visible of Marion is his chest on up and the neck and head of his horse. The rest is left to the imagination; it's as if Marion and his mount are somehow wedged into a tall cement box and are sticking out of its top. Sculptor Alex Palkovich created this oddly-staged artwork, for which private donors paid $100,000.
