Michigan City, Indiana: Share the Street with a Train (Closed)

One attraction that you definitely wanted to stop for; otherwise you'd be crushed. The trains ran from 1927 until finally being rerouted in May 2021.

Directions:
Downtown. The trains run along the center of W. 10th St., then switch to W. 11th St. and continue onto E. 11th St. for a total length of two miles.

Although the tracks set into the asphalt resemble those for harmless trolleys or "light rail," they're used by full-size crush-everything-in-their-path trains.

Share the Street with a Train

The South Shore Line runs from South Bend, Indiana, to Chicago. For two miles in Michigan City, Indiana, it runs down the center of city streets. And, yes, the train has to stop for the traffic lights. During the work week about 24 passenger trains come through Michigan City every day.
