Vicksburg, Mississippi: USS Cairo Sunken Ironclad
Civil War ironclad went to the bottom of the Yazoo River in 1862 after hitting a mine. A century later it was dredged up, restored, and is now part of a museum at Vicksburg National Military Park.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Maybe Tuesday and Wednesday, too. But you can still go on the ironclad.

[Emily Leitzinger, 05/24/2013]Sunk by an electronically detonated mine in 1862, forgotten for nearly a century, discovered in 1956, finally pulled from the bottom of the Yazoo River in 1964. Restored with replica ship elements atop the dredged up hull in the 1970s. Artifacts displayed in its museum.
