The Poe Center is a destination field trip site for schools and organized groups throughout North Carolina. The one-of-a-kind "PlayWELL Park" is open to the public, Monday-Friday, 8:30-5, weather permitting, but the actual Center is only for pre-scheduled field trips. Every fall they have something called "Poe Fest," which is a day-long family-friendly event that is open to the entire community.
[Alyssa Nobles, 06/25/2019]The education center is closed on Sundays, and the playground is, inexplicably, closed on the weekends.

The playground in front is free but hard to find! Gates are open. It's huge and has all sorts of neat body/health themed equipment to climb on. Great spot for traveling families to picnic!

There is also an interesting playground out front of the museum with giant ears, a tongue slide, and other neat equipment.

The Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education was closed when I got there, but I took this photo through the front door. Will try to visit again. I assume this is the "walk-in brain."
