Potato Famine Memorial

Huge ghastly memorial sculpture just off Chestnut St., east of Front St., Philadelphia, PA.

[Laurie Zambrano, 12/10/2014]

Ghastly is right. "An Gorta Mor," Ireland's Great Hunger of 1845-1850, starved a million Irish and made another million emigrate to countries with food (mostly the US). This monumental sculpture tries to finish on a cheery note about the talents and contributions of Irish-Americans, but the graveyard and skeletal bodies in bronze are probably what you'll remember.
