The monument remembers four chaplains aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester transport ship on Feb. 3, 1943, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine and sunk in 18 minutes. The chaplains -- Protestant, Catholic, Jewish -- distributed life jackets to panicked sailors, and when they ran out, gave their own life jackets. Surviviors watched the four, arms interlocked, go down with the ship, as depicted in the sculpture.
