Barstow, California: Vehicles from Hell

Mad Max-style vehicles made from wreck parts were the personal collection of the late proprietor of a body shop. They were constructed by Ed and Greg Parker and some have appeared in cheesy collapse-of-civilization SF films shot in the region.

Vehicles from Hell

Go ahead and make the effort to stop. It's super easy to find the Vehicles from Hell, and the dinosaur is very cool. Even though the business is closed upm it's no problem to see everything right from the road -- and the vehicles are definitely something to see.

Vehicles From Hell

The Vehicles From Hell are still there, although the A-1 Body Shop sign is gone now and the shop perimeter is lined with fence and barbed wire. You can see the cars through the fence.

The vehicles are located right down the street from the dive-in movie theater on the corner of Old Hwy 58 and Soap Mine Rd.

Vehicles from Hell

The vehicles from Hell are still there. Most of them anyway. The owner passed away and the yard was cleared out. A few of the more bizarre car sculptures have been saved and dragged over to the right side of the yard and are visible from the road.

Vehicles from Hell

About two years ago, my car broke down on a stretch of road leading to Ft. Irwin, which all the locals call "the longest cul-de-sac in the world", because it is 30 miles of desolation at the end of which is the military post. I called the nearest towing service which was on the out skirts of Barstow, and upon entering the stations yard, was greeted by the most bizarre and outlandish collection of cars, trucks, and motorcycles. I told the driver that they looked like something out of a Mad Max movie. He then informed me that this was his brother's hobby, and yes indeed, they had been used in the first two movies. Inside the garage is an equally bizarre collection of metal sculptures. There is a small box and sign at the entrance requesting donations so the "artist " can continue work on his collection of vehicles from hell. I don't have exact directions, but it is off the main highway going through Barstow. It is a tow service & body shop, although they no longer do any professional body work.

Ed Parker died in 1998, and brother Greg died in 2005, but some of their creations might still be hanging around in the large car lot yard.
