The Captain Muffler Man's hat did survive; it was next to the statue. Joel Baker [of American Giants] recovered the hat and was able to find the Phillip 66 logo under the paint with the anchor on it. It had been a cut-down cowboy hat.

The long-missing Captain Muffler Man of Douglas has been found! It turns out that the giant was never actually in Douglas, but instead just south of Gray, Georgia, on Highway 129, at a small used car lot named Anchor Sales. The business was sold around 1998 and the new owners were not interested in the Captain, who was taken down and stored in the woods for the last 26 years. Rediscovered by Dave Distler, American Giants then retrieved the Captain in March. He is currently at Mark Cline's shop in Virginia for restoration, and will eventually stand at the American Giants Museum in Atlanta, Illinois, as a Phillips 66 Cowboy.
[Joel Baker, 03/29/2024]Looks like his captain's cap did not survive the quarter-century campout.
A recently discovered Muffler Man is. in South Georgia, somewhere near Douglas.
[Laura Floyd, 07/12/2001]Later corrected as in Macon, Georgia.
