Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour

I've been on several mine tours throughout the country and by far this was the best. It starts with a 1000 foot elevator ride down into the mountain where you then experience what it was like to be working in a mine. The tour guide actually demonstrates several different tools that were used in the mine. You also get to take a short train ride down in the mine. The entire tour lasted about one hour.

A fatal elevator accident in October 2024 (the casualty was a tour guide) cast a pall over this seasonal mine tour, but it expects to reopen for business in April 2025.

Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour

When the mine went into operation in the late 1800s, it produced gold for its owner, Mollie Kathleen. The mine was closed when it became too expensive to extract the precious metal from the ore, and it was later converted into the attraction that it is today.

Visitors are lowered in cages 1,000 feet below the surface and are taken on an hour-long tour of the mine. It's both educational and entertaining. At the end you're given a souvenir rock that's guaranteed to contain gold.
