Leggett, Texas: The Burning House

Two East Texas artists took an old shotgun shack house, moved it to the side of a highway, and outfitted it with colorful flames shooting out its windows. Visitors could leave comments in the mailbox. The house has been slowly decaying for years, but it's still there.

The Burning House

The "flames" were wrapped in unlit Christmas lights. Would be interesting to see lit up at night.

Gate was shut, so parking on premises wasn't possible. Safest choice for parking is at nearby rest area on northbound side of Hwy 59, then take a short hike to the house. Take a paper and pen along to drop a note in the "comments" mailbox.

No one is there. Not worth a detour.

The Burning House

A bizarre house on the side of the road with what appear to be flames coming out of the windows. It seems you can't get too close, but there's a good spot to park and wonder why somebody would go to the trouble of creating an art installation so far from anything and with so little explanation.

The Burning House is a 100-year-old shotgun shack augmented with big, multicolored canvas flames that jut from its windows. It was created by East Texas artists Clint and Emily Sloan Alexander. Visitors are invited to stop and leave comments in the mailbox. August 2015: Photo added.
