From 2000 until 2006 this was the largest free-swinging bell in the world. It weighs nearly 37 tons and is 12 feet wide. It was originally supposed to hang in a tower as tall as the Empire State Building, but those plans were scaled back significantly. The bell is swung and rung every day at 11:55 AM, and is rung in place by a striker every hour. It can be heard 25 miles away.
