Abandoned Insane Asylum

This is a beautiful place! See it while you can. It is sprawling, on a beautiful landscaped area. I loved it!

Wish they gave tours. Heard rumors of it being demolished. No signs of that. Worth the drive! Place is huge!

Abandoned Insane Asylum

This is one of the few remaining Kirkbride-style hospitals. It's abandoned and closely watched, so don't trespass, but it's worth walking the exterior and it makes for great photos. Although the back buildings have all been torn down, the main hospital still stands -- but its future is up in the air.

Abandoned Insane Asylum

There are plans to renovate the complex into an upscale hotel and restaurants, but it hasn't started yet. You can see some additions, including one pretty recent, but the building is quite solid and intact.

Fergus Falls State Hospital.

Abandoned Insane Asylum

Now-defunct insane asylum and rehabilitation center in Fergus Falls is one of the last remaining "Kirkbride" style state mental hospitals. Opened in 1890 and closed in 2008, the massive compound features large, imposing, Victorian architecture and is probably haunted. At this time its future is uncertain.

[BS Meyer, 08/28/2013]

The remains of over 3,000 patients lay buried in the asylum cemetery.
