Founded in 1975 and moved to its present location in an old furniture showroom in 2005, the River Country Nature Center reproduces Nebraska's ecosystems with the help of some 500 taxidermy specimens -- including more than 100 chickens installed in a retired two-room coop.
The collection is the life's work of Joe Voges' Naturecraft Taxidermy Studios, founded in the early 1930s, and includes a replica of Joe's studio, his wartime paintings of Hawaiian fauna, and decades' worth of "Modern Taxidermist" back issues -- not to mention albino specimens, an opossum covered with babies, a taxidermied cock fight, and a three-legged chick preserved from 1934.
