A 1926 arch bridge on old Hwy 101 was demolished by the great Christmas flood of 1964. The west remnant of the bridge, with its pair of bear statues, was preserved as a monument.

In 1964, the Douglas Memorial Bridge was swept away by a massive flood. The entrance to the bridge is still there with the copper bears. The new bridge is a bit up river with large gold bears at each end.
