Near Monterey's famous Cannery Row at the intersection of Drake Avenue and Wave Street is a small park dedicated to the memory of Doc Ricketts the hero of John Steinbeck's novels and his book Cannery Row. The marine biologist, who was a friend of Steinbeck's, was killed in his car at this spot on March 8, 1948 when he collided with the evening train as it crossed through the intersection.
The park is a fitting memorial with its bronze bust of Doc Ricketts holding a starfish along with a section of railroad track and RR crossing warning sign and lights. Benches between the tracks and offer the passerby a place to rest and reflect upon this famous character.
