Greensboro, North Carolina: Elsewhere Museum

Sylvia Gray kept saving stuff in her store from 1935 until her death in 1997. Six years passed before anyone dared to try to sort it out. The result is today's art-skewed Elsewhere Museum.

Elsewhere Museum

We visited Elsewhere. Had a wonderful time exploring all the art and potential art. The admission is $1-$5 per person -- whatever you want to give. The money keeps the artists going. Very unique! You can swing in their storefront window or "confess" in a private booth.

Art!

Elsewhere Museum

We visited the Elsewhere Museum and took a bunch of photos! It was definitely quirky and inspiring!

Elsewhere Museum

The Elsewhere Museum, a former thrift store, uses its extensive collection to build futures from old things. The contents of the museum were all collected by one woman, Sylvia Gray, over a period of 58 years. She ran a few businesses out of the building (e.g. Army surplus store, furniture restoration, etc.) but never sold much, as she was very attached to her collections. In 2003 Sylvia's grandson, George, and others, began to organize the contents of the building (which has been untouched since Sylvia's death in 1997). In 2005 it opened as the Elsewhere Museum.

Difficult to say where the hoarding ends and the art begins. Three floors of inspiring junk, including full-room installations described as "fabric fortresses" and "baby doll tornadoes."
