The cemetery has the grave of the first white woman in southeast Kansas (Granny Cowden), and the tombstone of Iola herself. A zinc statue of a Civil War soldier was removed in 2020.

The old Iola Cemetery was created in 1863 and among its interesting markers is this rare civil war figure made of zinc. There's also a historic wood and concrete WPA-era outhouse that goes by the name of "Eleanor" (after Eleanor Roosevelt).
