Civil War captain Jack McLain wanted his grave to be on the highest hill in Burkesville; it's still there, but so is a motel parking lot.

- Alpine Mountain View Motel. From the courthouse downtown turn west onto Hill St./Hwy 2276. Drive a half-mile, up into the hills. The entrance to the motel will be on the left. Drive past the swimming pool on the right; you'll see the grave straight ahead, in a little traffic island, with its own historical marker.

According to motel parking lot owners, the grave was at another location near the highway, but during construction in the 1950s it was relocated to its current spot with a new funeral.
