World's Largest Geodesic Structure

Dropped by for a visit to this unique structure. On a weekday, the gate was open and I was able to drive down to the bottom and be at the base. Quite a unique piece of architecture!

Make sure to also stop at the Novelty, Ohio post office, which is nearby.

Geodesic Dome

Built in 1958, this giant geodesic dome (actually two domes, one inside the other) is 274 feet across and 103 feet high. The dome weighs 80 tons and uses 13 miles of aluminum tubing cut into roughly 65,000 parts, then welded into hexagons.

[M.A.P., 10/11/2013]

It acts as a canopy over the headquarters of the American Society of Metals, and supposedly serves as a symbol of Man's mastery over raw materials. "Kneel, humble aluminum ore! Our 1958 genius will transform you into a -- dome!"
