It's on both sides of the highway, so pull over if the driver wants to see too. It's stunning!

The Valley of Fires, or Carrizozo Malpais, is a series of ancient lava flows about ten miles long. There are several scenic spots to pull off by the roadside (which are free), and there is also a park with camping and hiking areas (for various fees). The lava flows are just incredible, especially with the mountains in the background. It is just a really strange place. You're driving through flat, boring New Mexico, and then there's this! It is like being on another planet.
