Fireman's Drinking Fountain

While visiting the Fireman Drinking Fountain, we met a nice guy -- Spankey -- who runs the '50s ice cream shop, Darla's, up the hill. He told us the fireman statue was hit by a car and that the original statue was actually in the town's cemetery.

We drove up to the top of the hill, and sure enough, there was a monument to firemen just like the one in town, but made of stone. The cemetery is about 3/4 of a mile up the hill from the fireman drinking fountain just past Cemetery St. on the right. You can see the monument from the road but why not stop by.

Fireman's Drinking Fountain

A 12-foot-tall statue of a 1909 fireman holding a child and a lantern is above the fountain. The statue was intended to be symbol of volunteer service, vigilance, and humanity. It does not memorialize a deceased firefighter, but instead honors the living as well as the spirit of voluntary service in the Slatington region.

The statue was erected in April 1910 atop a big water trough for horses and a little one for dogs. It was fully restored in 2002. A big bell behind it belonged to the local firehouse that still regularly cleans the statue.
