Dallas, Texas: Whites Only Drinking Fountain: Now It's Art

The "Whites Only" lettering is barely visible on the wall above the fountain. When you push the button to get a drink, you first watch 45 seconds of film clips from the Civil Rights era. Artist Lauren Woods calls it a "new media monument."

509 Main St., Dallas, TX
Just east of Dealey Plaza, on the north side of Main St., inside the Dallas County Records Building. On the second floor (which in this building is confusedly called the First Floor), to the right when facing the elevators, next to a fire hose case, near the Marriage License office. A small stainless steel drinking fountain.

Whites Only Drinking Fountain, Now It's Art

There is a sign to the left of the fountain explaining the art installation. You only know about it if you read the sign that is tucked away in a little recessed area. The local people around us thought it was neat that the fountain had a video but had no idea of its significance.
