Dania Beach, Florida: Wild Monkeys of Dania Beach Blvd

African vervet monkeys, released from a nearby attraction, have made this woodsy stretch of road their home since the 1950s, despite occasional attempts to evict them. Look, don't touch; monkeys will bite, hard.

825 E. Dania Beach Blvd, Dania Beach, FL
From Fort Lauderdale Airport drive south about two miles on US Hwy 1. Turn left at the stoplight onto E. Dania Beach Blvd. Drive one mile. You'll see a Motel 6 on the left. Pull into its parking lot and drive all the way to the back to the chain link fence. That's a good place to try to see the monkeys, although they're all around this woodsy stretch of road. Also reported around the Park 'N Go. Note: There is a $500 fine, or 90 days in jail, or both, for feeding the monkeys.
Whenever you're lucky enough to spot them. Local health policies may affect hours and access.

Wild... but oddly civilized.

The monkeys are at the Park 'N Go near the cruise ship docks. They get on the cars and are on the fences.

Dania Monkeys

Sadly, there are only two monkeys left at the Motel 6. Their increase in popularity attracted trappers. In the mid-1990s as many as nine were trapped by Jim Anderson. I pulled the records from FWC and saw that he traded the monkeys to an exotic pet dealer in Dade for fennec foxes.

Dania Beach Wild Monkeys at Motel 6

We stayed at the Motel 6, and the front desk staff told us where on the property to look for the monkeys. It took a few attempts, but one evening around 6:30 pm I finally saw one. Totally worth it! At the Motel 6, against the back fence, seems to be the best place.

Could not find a single monkey and we looked long and hard!

[Kelly Soprych, 05/03/2015]

The monkeys, like all wild creatures, have their own schedules that usually don't mesh with ours. One way to encourage a monkey visit is to leave out some fruit and then wait, although it is illegal to feed the monkeys. It can be frustrating, but they really are there.
