Right after we passed the 31 mph sign, we had to yield to 5 wild turkeys crossing the highway.
[Carla Blanton, 09/26/2011]Grew up in Trenton and was friend of Mayor Lawler in the early 1960s when the 31MPH speed limit was adopted. The mayor and aldermen could not agree on either 30 or 35 MPH speed limit. 31 was proposed as a (tongue-in-cheek) compromise. It was adopted and has stood as the posted speed in the town of 5000 ever since.

Trenton is supposedly famous for its "World's Largest Collection of Teapots," but few realize that there is a dark side to this west Tennessee town. Trenton has been in a heated feud with neighboring Kenton (White Squirrel Capital of the World) for years. So heated is the feud, Trenton kidnapped several white squirrels and tried to breed them in Trenton in order to overtake the squirrel title. They also have a 31 mph speed limit so they will be one-up on Kenton. No kidding!

Probably to attract tourists, the town of Trenton, TN has had 31 mph speed limit signs for at least the last ten years.
