Lawrence, Kansas: Nightly Indoor Mermaid and Snowstorm at a Bar
Every night since 2002, a customer in the Sandbar (usually a woman) is asked to put on a mermaid costume, stand on the bar, and recite a poem written by the owner. At the conclusion giant fans are turned on and a "hurricane" of real artificial snow fills the bar. This is not a slick Vegas-style showcase; just a small, old neighborhood bar with a beach theme.

The bar still has the nightly hurricane event, though we went on a Monday summer night and the bartender deemed the crowd not big enough to bother to turn on the Bubble/wind machine and put on a show. The decor is entertaining and the drinks good for college kids (fun names, watered-down taste). It is a quirky place amid trendy restaurants.
[Stacey, 07/19/2019]I love this place so much! One side of my family is from Lawrence, and every time I go down there to visit, they take me to the Sandbar. The owner is a big, huggable lady named Peach Madl (pronounced Muh-dill). She opened her doors in 1989 and has been spiraling into weirdness ever since. Indoor hurricane is spectacular, but prepare to get wet!
