You are right, the muffler man next to I-65 in Birmingham is practically impossible to photograph... I know, because I live there. Recent high winds have made the figure even more difficult to see, because when I passed by on Sunday, February 22, nothing was left but his legs. No word on whether his torso will be repaired or replaced.
[Tim Hollis, 02/26/1998]I believe one of the muffler men sits atop a tire store overlooking interstate 65 in downtown Birmingham. He may be difficult to photograph, but I'll try to confirm his existence in a later message.
[Tony French, 10/13/1997]The Birmingham M-Man is very tough to photograph. There's no place to stop, so you have to shoot while driving 60+mph. We recommend afternoon light, heading north with your cameraperson in the passenger seat.
