Acton, Indiana: Veal's Ice Tree

Since 1961, when the Veal family first accidentally created a winter ice tree instead of their planned ice slide, this nutty freezing experiment has continued. Six hoses continually replenish the structure, sometimes topping 80 feet.

I-74 Acton Rd exit., left/east on Southeastern Ave./Mimosa Ln. after sharp curve turn left into first driveway. Private property.
Hours:
Subfreezing temps required, sunrise - lit until 10 pm. Local health policies may affect hours and access.

Spoke with Winter, the ice tree creator's granddaughter, and she said the tallest the ice has gotten was 85 feet! We happened to get there when she was changing spray colors -- which she was kind enough to allow us to spray.

Veal's Ice Tree

1961 the family was spraying for an ice slide. When they awoke in the morning, the ice tree was born. They mix powdered food coloring dye and water is sprayed onto the tree with a garden sprayer. The tree has reached 70 feet.
