Ajo, Arizona: Jet Target on Bombing Range
An interesting-if-distant diversion from the usual jet-on-a-stick displays in public parks; this jet is a target on a live bombing range.

- I-8 exit 115, then drive south 22 miles on Hwy 85. You'll see the jet off to the right, about a half-mile into the desert. There's a pull-off and a gated road that leads straight to the jet, but if you value your life you won't climb over the fence.

About 20 miles north of Ajo on Highway 85, on the west side of the road, you will see a white jet sitting out in the middle of the desert. It's on the USAF Barry Goldwater Range, about a half-mile from the highway. There's a pull-off to a road that goes right out to the jet, but you can only view it from the highway side of a fence -- due to concerns about exploded ordnance and the fact that an F16 or A10 may roll in on you and do a strafing run with live ammo. That would probably ruin your whole day, so stay on the highway side of the fence. You can see the jet just fine from the road, but bring your binoculars for a closer look at all the holes in the jet. They have shot the hell out of it over the years.
