This escalator was originally the crowning jewel of one of America's first indoor theme parks: The World of Syd and Marty Krofft. The park was only open for five months in 1976 before closing due to high operating costs [and low attendance]. This escalator took you to the top floor of the park, which was the entrance. Rides and attractions were on the main floors and the three floors below. I was one of the few people who ventured to the Krofft World while it was still open!
[Amy A., 10/16/2015]World's longest freestanding escalator? If so it's not by much. The double escalators in the Langham Place mall in in Hong Kong go from the 4th floor to the 8th, then you step forward onto the second set which takes you to the 12th floor. There's not much visible holding the two up and two down escalators. The mall advertises that it's free-standing all the way -- it was just divided into two sections so the motors won't wear out. I lived and worked just two blocks from the Langham Place mall and ate there several times a week (Both the CNN and Langham Place escalators look down over huge food courts). Langham Place gets my vote as it's free.

It is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest freestanding escalator in the world. It's inside the CNN Center. You can see it any time when the center is open, but if you want to ride it you have to take the studio tour, which charges an admission fee.
[David, 03/13/2014]Or, you could be invited to appear on CNN as an expert on a topic such as record-setting escalators. Then you could ride for free.

Yes, but the cab fare to get to Hong Kong from America is probably more than CNN's admission charge.
