As you're driving on I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix you will see a large pointed mountain that you can see for miles and miles. This is Picacho Peak, a landmark used by pioneers, Native Americans, and early aviators. It is also the site of the only Civil War battle fought in Arizona. There you will find all the information you could ever want to know about this battle. Along with the signs you can see an actual replica of a Civil-War-era 12-pounder Mountain Howitzer and limber. The results of the skirmish were three Union dead and two wounded, and three Confederates captured. If you're stopping off to see the Melted Muffler Man just down the street, take the time to check out this monument. It's best seen during daylight hours, and if you just park in the visitors' lot it won't cost you a dime.
