Halifax, Massachusetts: Legs of Myles Standish

The military commander of the Pilgrims has a towering statue in Duxbury. But the 12-foot-tall, 10-ton granite legs of the original 1872 statue, destroyed by lightning in 1922, stand in Halifax. Owner Marc Valentine often greets visitors.

Legs of Myles Standish

Had a great visit, mainly because Marc came out to give us a U.S. history lesson! Be sure to ask about the truck that carries the 9-story U.S. flag to places around the globe, while you're there.

I stopped to show a friend the remains of the Myles Standish statue and we got a great history lesson from owner Marc Valentine. He has other interesting historical artifacts there, too. He also hopes to locate the original head, as it's known to be intact somewhere in Massachusetts.

We saw a sign for this and decided to stop to see the legs. We were fortunate as the property owner was standing near the legs and provided a great historical tour. I love to learn about local history from passionate subject matter experts.

The owner gave us a history lesson of the area. More people should hear his stories. Will return again.
