A memorial commemorates baseball celebrity Carl Mays in his boyhood hometown of Mansfield. The monument stands in the town square and was dedicated in June 2010. The memorial was designed and erected by Engrave-A-Crete as a gift to the town. Carl Mays is primarily remembered for throwing the beanball that killed Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians on August 16, 1920. Chapman remains the only major league player to die as a direct result of an on-field injury.
