Greensboro, North Carolina: Historic Civil Rights Lunch Counter
In 1960 this was a Woolworths, and its lunch counter is where four black students sat and refused to leave until they were served. Now it's a Civil Rights museum, and the lunch counter has been preserved as it was, including all its chrome hardware and orange-and-blue seats. No one's allowed to sit at it now. Outdoors still has the Woolworth's facade, and a bronze plaque.

For everyone, especially those who wish to hold a public office, this is a must-see. Take the tour first, then go back if you want depth and details. While the focus here is on African-Americans, the principles apply equally to Latinos, Asians, Indigenous people, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and anyone who's been discriminated against as different. Prejudice comes from stereotypes and ignorance. This is a place to learn the about our nation's past failures in honoring the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

The counter is the highlight of a museum featuring the civil rights movement and how life was under Jim Crow laws. No photography allowed inside. The counter has a media show that tells the history of the sit-in.

Well worth a visit for anyone interested in this country's Civil Rights movement. The lunch counter is only visible (through a glass exhibit case) on a guided tour which takes place every 30 minutes or so. There is a gift shop and a number of paintings and photographs to peruse whilst waiting.
