Circleville, Ohio: Octagon House

There was probably a very practical reason for the Gregg family to build an eight-sided house in 1855, but today it's an oddity. Though not a great oddity, since there are 33 more in Ohio alone...

410 Crites Rd, Circleville, OH
From US Hwy 23 at the south end of town, turn east at the WalMart shopping center, then north onto Court St., then east onto Crites Rd. Drive almost to the dead end, then turn left onto the old roadway. Drive to the end, through the bushes, and you'll see the house.
Currently closed, but visible from the outside. Local health policies may affect hours and access.

Octagon House

We were able to tour the inside of the Octagon House in 2017. They are still working to restore the house, which they plan to rent out as event space. The view of the town's pumpkin-shaped water tower is great from the second floor.

Octagon House

An eight-sided farmhouse was built by the Gregg family in 1855 and later occupied by the Crites family. It was originally on land now occupied by a shopping center. It was moved to its present location on February 14, 2004, after it had been placed on the list of endangered Ohio historical sites (Only 33 other octagon houses remain in Ohio). It is estimated to weigh 480 tons. It is currently being renovated and is not open to the public, but can be viewed from the outside any time.

Posted in the hopes that at least one of these almost interesting buildings is a museum of 8-sided objects, or haunted by octagon utopians.
