New Bern was founded in 1710 by Christoph von Greffenreid who named the town in honor of his hometown of Bern, Switzerland. "Bern" is the Swiss word for bear and bears are prominently featured in both cities. New Bern's City Hall has two bear heads protruding over the arched entrances to the building.
