Always fun to go to Churubusco during the Turtle Fest!
[Stephen Francia, 06/30/2021]
No need to go to Scotland for the Loch Ness Monster...Indiana is home to Oscar the Monster Turtle of Fulk Lake in the city of Churubusco, IN. Located just north of Fort Wayne on US Route 33...Oscar was first spotted in 1898 and then again 1948. Described as big as a boat or a car, this "prehistoric" giant turtle caused such as uproar in 1949 the lake was drained just to find him! No luck.
To this day the city is known as Turtletown USA and holds a festival every June. One of the oldest fests in Indiana at 63 years & counting. They are wild about turtles there. They are everywhere...including a 12-15' statue of Oscar standing at the north end of town at the entrance to the 60 acre community park. It's said on damp, foggy nights Oscar rises up to eat unwary ducks and geese. Do you dare to visit and try to catch a glimpse of the Fulk Lake Horror? I dare you!
