Linville, North Carolina: Mile-High Swinging Bridge
228-foot-long pedestrian bridge, whipped by some of the highest winds in the U.S. The gorge is only 80 feet deep, but the bridge is a mile high atop Grandfather Mountain, making it the highest in America. It's often 30 degrees colder than at the base of the mountain. Drive to the top!

- Grandfather Mountain State Park. I-40 exit 85. Turn north at the bottom of the ramp. Drive one mile to a stoplight. At the stoplight turn left and drive north on US Hwy 221 about 30 miles, to milepost 305 and the entrance road to Grandfather Mountain. Hairpin curves; no vehicles over 28 feet long. Bring a coat or sweater, even in summer.
