The Museum of Aviation unveiled a bronze statue of Eugene Jacques Bullard, the "First African American Fighter Pilot," this week. Born a slave, he volunteered to fly and fight in France, where he'd lived since 1913. He became a French aviator in 1917, and had dogfights with German planes, claiming to down two.
The French gratefully acknowledged his service over the years, but Bullard wasn't allowed to join the American military as a pilot. The sculpture depicts Bullard in uniform, arms crossed.
