Harriet Wood, an actress with the stage name Pauline Cushman, was caught spying for Union side during the Civil War and sentenced to hang. She somehow avoided execution, was awarded the rank of major, appeared as a P.T. Barnum wonder, died decades later as Pauline Fryer.

Buried in the San Francisco Presidio National Cemetery, Pauline Cushman-Fryer was the daughter of one of Napoleon Bonaparte's soldiers. She served as a Union spy during the Civil War and was captured, found guilty and sentenced to hang. Saved just three days before her execution, Pauline lived to age 60 and died in San Francisco.
