Jourdanton, Texas: Muffler Man: The Chief

A bit of local lore about the Muff-Man in Native American dress at McCombs Used Car lot off NW Loop 410. My friend, recounting high school days (late '60s) of late-night mischief with buddies, would unload a round of arrows into the crotch of "Big Chief," drive-by style from the back of a junker pick-up.

I'm not sure about this detail, but I believe the prank might have been a pre-game ritual against football rivals (i.e.,Chiefs, Warriors, Indians etc.). I should say that he recounted the story with regret and embarrassment; his belated fondness and reverence for this enduring local landmark was easy to see ...

Up close can see that "Big Chief" has taken a lot of shots (arrow and otherwise) but is still standing as tall, strong and handsome as ever.

As a native of San Antonio, I would just like to add that during basketball season, the Muffler Man/Native American at Red McComb's used car lot will often be wearing a giant Spurs jersey in support of his local favorite NBA team.

There is an Indian Chief here in San Antonio overseeing the sale of used cars. It's comforting to know that there is someone looking out for the sake of the customers.
