Layton Muffler Man

Since it has been 10 years since a solid tip on the Layton Muffler Man I stopped in on my way through the Salt Lake City area to see if he still makes an appearance at homecoming each year.

Layton High School is currently under major construction and things were pretty busy with school starting in a few days. I asked a few people about their Mascot and they all knew of him but were very hazy on when they had last seen him. I met a very helpful staff member inside that put me in contact with their custodian. He informed me that the muffler man started falling apart and was finally trashed and discarded. Seems no one could recall seeing him recently so I would guess he has been gone around 5 years.

Muffler Man - Only One Week a Year

The "big man" was acquired by the senior officers 8 years ago and converted to look like our school's mascot (a roman lancer). He's pretty impressive with helmet, lance and "skirt." Because of the city ordinance that got him taken down from a local grocery store for being too tall more than 10 years ago the student officers must go to the city council every year for a variance to put the "big guy" on top of the school for Homecoming Week. We like him, even though he is hard to dismantle and store each year.
