The chicken sanctuary is no more. A woman working at the visitor center said that the chickens had over-populated and become unruly and so were rounded up and adopted. The sanctuary has even been stickered-over in the visitor center brochures.

There was a bunch of chickens running around in the street when I was there about 8 am.
[Andy, 05/15/2015]A small area of the town of Bastrop is known as Farm Street Chicken Sanctuary. The chickens are all descendants of the original chickens from the 1860s. They are the town's oldest established residents. Best time to see chickens are early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
[Becca, 08/17/2014]The sanctuary was created by the town in 2009. After some non-chicken-lovers complained, the town installed lamp post banners in 2012, affirming its commitment to the chickens.
