The palace is a worthwhile tour if you are interested in understanding the history of monarchical Hawaii prior to US involvement. In addition to the palace visit there is history on the monarchs and life on the islands in the 1800s. I found this by accident but glad I visited. Be sure to see the King Kamehameha statue across the street.

Iolani Palace, built in 1882, is the only former royal residence in the United States. The last King and Queen of Hawaii ruled from the palace before it was annexed, with the rest of the Hawaiian Islands, in 1898. Today the building has been restored and is open for tours. The coronation pavilion, where later Hawaiian royalty was crowned, has been moved to the grounds of the palace.
