Hollywood, California: The Hollywood Sign
Built in 1923 as "Hollywoodland," an advertisement for an adjacent housing subdivision. Now just "Hollywood," symbol of the movie industry. Residents of the former Hollywoodland discourage tourists, so sign close-ups are elusive.
- Address:
- Mulholland Hwy, Hollywood, CA
- Directions:
- The closest you can currently get to the sign is at the upper dead end of Mulholland Hwy -- but roads and trailheads below the sign are often blocked by irate residents. Locals urge visitors to go to Griffith Observatory, park, and take the main hiking trail to one of several overlooks, but that's pretty far away.
- Admission:
- Free.
- RA Rates:
- Worth a Detour

A great place to view the Hollywood sign is at the Lake Hollywood Dog Park (3202 Canyon Lake Dr). You can take pictures from the park. There is also a hiking trail you can follow or a nearby road that you can drive up, to get closer to the Hollywood Sign.

There are several places to view the Hollywood sign. The Griffith Park Observatory is one option. There are several trail options in the area that offer lovely views, however they're all so dusty. If you're looking to not get dust all over your outfit and rocks in your shoes then I suggest viewing it from the Hollywood and Highland Center Mall. There's a nice little lookout to the rear. There's easy access to AC, bathrooms and drinks and more centrally located to other fun.
