Tijeras, New Mexico: Route 66 Musical Road

Paid for by an insurance company for the 2014 National Geographic Channel series, "Crowd Control." The road plays part of "America the Beautiful" -- but only if you travel the speed limit: 45 mph. Signs removed and maintenance stopped in 2020, but it's still there. By 2024 someone had hand-made a "Musical Road" sign to mark its position.

Musical Highway Route 66

The musical tone was still working as of September 2021. You have to go 45 mph, or it will just make a hum. At the lower speed you can hear it.

[Martha Arias, 11/03/2021]

The serious purpose behind the Musical Road was to entice travelers to slow down to 45 mph, the posted speed limit.

The signs are down, but we were able to hear the chorus today. The rumble strips are a little hard to see, so drive just to the left of the white side line and hear the tune. There are much more than just the four notes mentioned in another tip. So cool and quirky!

The rumble strips are to the left of the white line, but are super worn down, so barely makes noise no matter the speed. I'm definitely disappointed.

The blue musical note sign, announcing the musical road section, is no longer there to mark it. We did find it eventually though.

[Amber, 05/31/2021]

The state took down the sign when it decided to stop maintaining the musical part of the road. People still seek it out.
