Awkward Airport Sculptures
These are probably the strangest sculptures I've ever seen.
They are in Cedar Rapids, at the entrance to its airport. When I saw them my first thought was that they looked like three airplanes that had crashed nose-first into the ground. I thought that if anyone was afraid of flying, these certainly wouldn't help them get over their fear. I later looked them up, and found that according to their artist, Tom Stancliffe, they represent the sea gulls that flew around Kitty Hawk when the Wright Brothers made their historic flight.
Now that I know that, I guess the top of the columns look somewhat like seagulls in flight, but I think Tom could have made them look less like crashed airplanes. They were installed in June 2006 and are called "To Wing."
