Big Peanut for The Peanut King

The annual Floresville Peanut Festival is the 2nd weekend of October. They have an elaborate ceremony where they crown Queen Tunaep (peanut backwards) and King Reboog (goober, another word for peanut). We went this year and the parade was amazing. The clothes they make for peanut royalty are mind blowing! We also got lots of delicious peanut treats and our picture with the giant peanut. We plan to go again next year.

Giant Peanut Memorial

On the Wilson County courthouse lawn in Floresville sits this giant peanut statue. Peanuts have been a major crop in the area for some time. The plaque below it states that it was erected by the Jaycees and Jaycee-ettes and is dedicated to the citizens of Wilson County.

The sign to the right states: "In loving memory of 'The Peanut King' Joe T. Sheehy who in 1916 experimented with peanut farming and introduced it as a viable crop to the farmers of Wilson County." The sign was placed by the descendants of Joe T. Sheehy.

We remember seeing this peanut in the 1980s, but forgot where it was. Thanks for tracking it down!
