In 2014, a group that opposes recognition of comfort women filed a lawsuit that sought the removal of this statue. The suit was rejected by a U.S. District Court. The decision was upheld again in 2016 at the appellate level. In 2017 the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
